so i spent the day on Blanchesses beach with a small group of models and another photographer friend of mine Kerron Riley. It was a cool set up free to shoot whatever good weather nice location. Started off a little rough at first had a little trouble hitting my stride but eventually it came together. BUt sadly and once again a simple oversight on my part ruined what would have other wise been a series of awesome dare i say 'all but perfect shots' ... i forgot to check my ISO (again). i wont even tell you what it was im so embarassed. BUt imagine my dread when i started going through them just to see fuzzy face after fuzzy face i wanted to die.

well another lesson learned the haed way just have to make sure it never happens again.... dammit!!!

So its been over a year since i updated this thing lord knows ive never been much of a blogger but in going through it the other day i have come to realise the importance of keeping stock of my thoughts and images as i stumble through this journey that is photography.

Im a little sorry that it has taken me this long to do this since 2008 was filled with many an up and down, both technically and emotionally met and worked with a lot of great and not so great people and done a lot of fun and not so fun things. But fear not i intend to do some random looks bak at the year that was mostly in pictures but i will throw in a thought here and there. So if you happen upon this hello and welcome.

There are two little black birds who have built a nest in one of the palms that sit in the front of my house, i was really excited when i first realized it. But of late they have gotten very defensive and have taken to attacking me everytime i go to open or close my front gate... and im really getting annoyed. They are just damn lucky that their new braizen attitude allows for some really cool photos

Turtle Watching

Well i know ive been slacking for the last couple of months but im back.
Went to Grand Rivere a couple of weekends ago and had an oppertunity to go turtle watching for the first time, (yes i know living here 31 years and never gone turtle watching sad i know.) It was an amazing experience these are tryly amazing creatures and if you have never been turtle watching im telling you it is well worth the long drive and sandflies lol

Well my Camera completely bugged out on me on Easter Monday as i said ... and i have resigned myself to the fact that i will have to send it to the US to have it repaired. But the thought of going for an extended period of time without a camera was more than i could bare... so i sucked it up and bought myself a Canon 20D... and i LOVE it!!!

Now i know it isnt the hottest thing out there, but im working on a budget here and while i wont divulge how much i paid for it ...lt wasnt a bad deal.

hopefully i will get back my D60 in short and working order .. it would be nice to have a little back up. But for now i am pleased and looking foward to working with my new toy.

Camera woes

ARGHHHH! for god know why my camera has decided to stress me out.

First it started giveing me this annoying 'error99' message everytime i use the flash.

DESCRIPTION: This error occurs if there is an internal malfunction detected during the camera's self-checking procedure that's executed before every attempted exposure.

Yeah whatever, HOW DO I FIX IT?

REMEDIAL MEASURE: Try releasing the error by turning the main power switch OFF and then back ON. If this does not solve the problem, have the EOS D60 examined by a qualified service technician.

Geeze!

So anyway i turn the camera on and off for about half an hour so finally the error stops appearing but now aparrently the flash is out of sync with the shutter (or something) because even though the flash is going off im not seeing that in the captures.

at first i was getting this kind of thing... but now nothing.

I was thinking about what a wonderful time this must be to be a Trinidadian in Japan. I was listening to that Minmi song for Carnival this year and I realized that every year for the past three or four years … I’ve seen an increase in Japanese tourists and I realized that Trinidad culture is spreading in Japan.

I mean Minmi is a pretty popular artist in Japan that means se has a pretty large fan base so that a lot of people, being exposed to Soca that normally would have never had an opportunity to hear Soca at all. From there get learn about Machel and well that is soca at its best right now at its most refined commercially viable form. I anticipate a huge demand for Trinidad culture in the next few years.

Now I know that artist have been traveling to Japan and waving the flag long before anyone ever heard of MInmi in Japan, but it would still have been a fringe thing, but the Minmi angle gives it its first Japanese ‘pop’ular appeal. And that’s why living there now must be really amazing because when people start looking around for information about this new culture, you’re the one they will turn to for information. And they will take their lead from you as to what’s cool and what’s not.

To be there now is to be there for the virtual beginning of the cultural invasion that we are about to launch on Japan. In much the same way we did in New York, Toronto and London in the 70’s with Carnival.

Hosay parades take place in two Shiite communities in Trinidad: St. James, in the western section of Port-of-Spain, and Cedros, in the South. The colorful procession in St. James is the largest (five tadjahs) and draws thousands of spectators of all religions every year. The Shiites of St. James spend a considerable amount of time and money in the building of miniature temples (tadjahs, taziyas, hosays, mausoleums) with bamboo, wood, paper, and tinsel to depict the tomb of Hussain. These tadjahs range in height from 10 to 30 feet and are hauled through the streets on parade days accompanied by the beating of drums (tassas) and two standards in the shape of half-moons, each carried separately on the shoulder of one man at a time. The half-moons (one red and one green) symbolize the deaths of both Hussain and his brother Hassan; red for the blood of Hussain that was shed at Karbala and green for the poisoning of Hassan, 11 years earlier. The drums and flags are symbolic of those used in wars in the 7th century

Carnival soon come

Well as we sit on the threshold of the 2007 carnival season i wait in blissfull anticipation, excited about all the wonderful images that i will have an opportunity to shoot. But i wonder what it will be like this year.

Now i myself have never played mas aside for the occasional kiddies carnival growing up, but i have been on stage taking pictures as the bands crossed and i have a sense of the energy that savannah stage brings.

What i wonder will become of the masquerader without that outlet this year? Will they be able to still tap into that energy that no matter how long they have been on the road they some how find it in them to explode into a frenzy once sneaker hit ply wood. or will they just buzz around port of spain until they get to the point that they are just too tired to go on? And without that crescendo to look foward to what will be their motivation to go on? I suspect we are going to have a mediocre, early ending carnival this year.

But that remains to be seen and i hope to goodness that i am wrong.

Last Saturday my friend Neola asked me to take some pictures of her and her Family. It was kinda dodgy at first with the weather and the wind but in the end we got some really nice shots and the clouds and the greay sky actually made for an interesting look. I was pleased.

Ive been looking at the websites of so many photographer's lately, especially editorial and fashion photographers, and there are sooo many bad ones out there (not unlike illustrators and artist) and like illustrators and artist you can usually tell the ones that have some potential and that are worth a few minutes of your time from the ones you should just move on from, simply by the look and design of their website.

I mean its amazing to me how many really bad photographer websites there are out there. I always approach them like this; If they don't have any design sense to know they have a bad looking website, their photos can't be all that good either.

I mean in all fairness i will admit it isn't always a case of bad but rather boring photography, and naturally i mean from my own point of view.

I cannot wait for Carnival 2007.
As a picturetakeouter one of my favorite times to shoot is Carnival in Trinidad.
Its the one time of year that no matter where you go in Port of Spain there is something to shoot you could literally walk around all day with your camera stuck to your face. The colours, the costumes, beautiful people everywhere, the whole energy and vibe of the thing just sceams "This needs to be preserved fo all time!"

Through the eyes of the lense

How many moments, images, visions have we been forced to pass up for absence of a camera or the lack of time. That perfect image, the one image that would have really made your day, gone because we are people first and photographers second.

I remember I took a trip to Toronto earlier this year, a week after I purchased my camera, and I was just beaming with excitement. Now I had been to Canada twice before but this time I was especially excited. It was summer and I had my new camera, I was going to be there for a month and Caribana was two weeks away. From my point of view the photographic gods had smiled on me.

But for all the amazing photos I was able to take, I still kick myself for all the ones I didn’t get.

I remember one night in particular I went out to a club, so naturally I didn’t want to lug my camera around. Anyway I got very drunk and decided to leave my friends and go for a walk. So I wandered into Kensington, which if you don’t know is like the artsy district downtown, lots of students and creative types, kind of like Toronto’s Soho.

So anyway there I am wandering around, first time there and I hear these drums. Messed up as I was, naturally I was compelled to follow the sound. I wound up in a park in the middle of this little neighborhood and in a little clearing under the light, a bunch of what I assume was Portuguese or Brazilian kids (sounded like they were speaking Spanish, but not) just sitting and beating drums and singing it was a perfect moment. Then if missing that wasn’t bad enough this guy shows up baggy three quarter jeans and a rope slung over his shoulders proceeds to climb these parallel bars in the playground and hang upside down on it and do a flip I have not seen the likes of outside of the Summer Olympics.

Then there was the real kick in the nuts, was when one of the girls who was sitting in the little session circle gets up, she was one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen. She had long curly hair and these little horned rimmed glasses that only served to accent her natural beauty. She wore this long flowing red into yellow dress. And against the darkness of the night when she walked under the park lights she just glowed and the contrast between the fiery gradient of the dress against the green and it was one of those rich summer greens that grass gets, she was an absolute vision. But I left my damn camera… at home. Needless to say I just wanted to DIE.
